Dissenting Christianity–Here’s Where to Start

A list of resources is below.

After reading Walter Brueggemann’s Out of Babylon, it’s only logical to ask “so where would I go to get this type of Christianity?” I’ve put together my own personal shortlist of resources to help anyone who wants to “dip their toe into these waters” as to where to turn for more information and inspiration. This isn’t the “Christian Left” as it is normally thought of in the U.S. and associated with magazines like Sojourners. This is Christianity that attempts to recover the original anti-empire, anti-mammon attitude of the Old Testament “prophetic imagination” and the original Jesus whose incarnation, life and death testified a solidarity with suffering humanity. This solidarity elevates the poor and the vulnerable to the seat of honor rather than condemning them as “users” and “leaches,” and that shares more than leftover scraps at the table of plenty. Therefore some of the time it intersects with serious leftist and Marxian thought. Avoiding turning religion into a political ideology always means maintaining a distinction between the two and elevating faith over politics so that if there is a disagreement, faith wins and maintains its distinctive existence.
