We’re Fucked?

I’ve long thought that I had to get into just the right mood to write, but if I waited to get into that mood before writing again, I’d be waiting forever. I just googled “we’re fucked” and was astonished to see posts from 2010 and earlier. We are infinitely more fucked now that we were in 2008 or 2010.

Sometimes I think God has finally had enough; sometimes I think we’re just finally going to pay nature for being stupid; sometimes I think we’ve won a lot at the lottery but we are finally losing.

I’m scared–anyone who isn’t scared is delusional. If you don’t think that this is an unexpected and life-altering event, you’re delusional. This is going to change the rest of our lives. But we have in our power how we will react to it. What will we learn from it?

What is truly important? Do we have to fly all over the globe? Do we have to get our food from all points on the planet? Can we not only live with but know, love and cooperate with our neighbors? Covid-19 is forcing questions we’d rather not ask–and it’s penetrating the dreamscape we’ve been living in for a long time.

When all the worldly things fail, what’s left? I think it’s the relationships–with God, family, friends and neighbors. And, not last, our relationship with the earth–as in, if I don’t see the life-giving plants and animals doing their things, then we’re really fucked. Let this be the start of a new relationship with our environment, which God gave us, and which we are going to learn again to respect.

  1. Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
